Journal photo by David Rolfe -- 08/03/12 -- Charlie Thompson examines a stunted ear of corn on the edge of one of his corn fields in Davidson County near Wallburg. The stalks on the outer edge are still green, but inside the field is withered and brown. Thompson planted the field in late April, and the weeks of 100-degree heat with little rain in July doomed the crop. He plans to cut the field for silage, and hope his other fields do better.
